Classes 40 to 46

Again, mostly experienced via the wonders of preservation, although I am old enough to have seen quite a few 45s on passenger workings (although not old enough to have scored more for haulage). The 45s always seemed to be "life expired" and so whenever one appeared, there was major joy! Top bashes? 40145 from Leeds to Crewe in 2005, D832 on the East Lancs, 44008 chugging away on Peak Rail in 2006, and 45115 from Sheffield to Derby in 1987 with the ENTIRE front coach was full of Peak Bashers! And before you ask where the Class 43s are, well, they were all scrapped before I was born. And as for those other so called 43s, they'll always be Class 253 and 254 DEMUs to me...

A remarkable working at Reading on June 28th 1986, as 45108 was pressed into service on the 0825 Weston Super Mare - Paddington. The next leg of the diagram would have taken the Peak to Oxford, but the authorities didn't like the idea of keeping the 45 too far away from the West Country, so it was instead dispatched home on an afternoon train to Taunton.
