Classes 71 and 73
31st December 2006

What can you say about the Class 71? The only one I've ever seen, let alone bashed, so thumbs up all round. It does look fantastic. I have a bit of a soft spot for the 73s - when I started bashing, they were restricted to that "premium fares" route, the Gatwick Express, so when they started to flood onto the Bournemouth line EMU replacement workings, I'd never had it so good! Top bash? 73005 on a 73/1 booked working from Brighton to Portsmouth in 1990.

Loco hauled trains along the Fen Drayton branch were rare in the last few years of operation, but the use of a JA ranks as one of the more ridiculous workings! 73003 takes the empty stock of the 1415 shuttle out of Cambridge on September 30th 1989.

The use of a class 73 on the Brighton - Plymouth working between 1989 and 1991 was unusual enough, but when 73005 put in an appearance on December 1st 1990, yours truly was somewhat amazed! The unique liveried ED waits to leave Brighton with the 0905 departure.

The upside to unit replacements on the Weymouth line was the fact the older EMUs had to be taken out of service to provide parts for the Wessex Electrics, and 73s were drafted in as replacements. 73105 waits at Southampton on January 2nd 1988 with the 1132 Waterloo - Weymouth.
