Classes 58 and 59
5th June 2007

Like the 56s, basically freight locos, which might mean that unless you happened to see them a lot at your local station, then you might not see the appeal. This might actually go some way to explaining their following, as I seem to recall that the first time I saw a 58 at Ripple Lane after they'd been exiled from the north, it was a thrilling sight! Top bashes? 58043 from Peterborough to Finsbury in their dying months in 2002, and 59203 past my house in Bournville in 2007.

A little reported fact is that 59005's first passenger workings were at the Wimbledon Open Day on May 5th 1991, where the loco provided cab rides. In order to officially claim the loco for haulage, it was possible to ride "behind" the loco by travelling in the cab of the loco it was pulling, 50050. The Hoover, at this point carrying it's D400 number again, then pulled the 59 back into the depot.
